Meet Finance’s Sabrena King, who recently took part in an immersive 6-week Jawun APS Secondment Program on Miriwoong Country (Kununurra), East Kimberley, Western Australia.
Sabrena was seconded to Kununurra-Waringarri Aboriginal Corporation (Waringarri), where she worked on a governance uplift project and documented their financial and operational processes. Aimed at breaking down social barriers for the local First Nations community, Waringarri provides grassroots programs such as ‘on country’ healing with elders, improving access to education, and domestic violence prevention.
Sabrena used her leadership capabilities as a senior executive to provide professional development to a new operations manager, while also assisting other secondees through leadership discussions. Sabrena found that building confidence in others and making small contributions can have a massive impact on capability.
Sabrena had worked for short periods in First Nations communities before, but undertook the secondment to broaden her perspective. Working closely with community members, Sabrena discovered that deep listening and slowing down were key aspects of the Miriwoong culture and has integrated this philosophy into her APS role. By engaging with industry and stakeholders purely with the intention to listen, her team can identify gaps in process and achieve better service delivery and policy outcomes.
