The Commonwealth holds land parcels in all Australian states and territories and continues to consolidate the Commonwealth’s landholdings to reflect current and future needs.
Real property should only be held by the Commonwealth where it contributes to Government service delivery outcomes and ownership represents value for money, in accordance with the Commonwealth Property Disposal Policy.
Commonwealth property data collection and reporting
The Australian Government Property Register (AGPR) includes information on owned land held by non-Corporate Commonwealth entities. Entities are required to review and update the AGPR:
- as their owned land data changes,
- at least annually, to support the Commonwealth to meet its obligations in relation to the Commonwealth Places (Mirror Taxes) Act 1998, and
- when requested to do so by Finance.
Owned Estate data for public use
A data-set for Commonwealth Owned Estate is available for download at data.gov.au as well as the National Map.
Please note, the available data-set only includes land owned by Non-Corporate Commonwealth Entities and does not include:
- land owned by a Corporate Commonwealth Entity, or Commonwealth Company;
- residential land;
- road parcels;
- leasehold land within the ACT where the land is not used in the national interest;
- land used for, or co-located with, Defence bases or intelligence; or
- land identified by the responsible entity as not for publication due to sensitivities regarding the usage of the land.
