The Department of Finance (Finance) is committed to the safety and wellbeing of children and to creating and maintaining a child safe organisation, in line with the Commonwealth Child Safe Framework.

As part of our commitment, Finance:

  • undertakes an annual risk assessment to evaluate the risk of harm to children and young people, and has strategies in place to manage those risks
  • maintains a training and compliance regime to ensure applicable employees are aware of, and comply with, our child safety requirements
  • has adopted and progressed implementation of the National Principles for Child Safe Organisations.

Finance’s purpose is to provide high quality advice, frameworks and services to achieve value in the management of public resources for the benefit of all Australians.

While Finance’s business activities and functions rarely involve direct interaction with children, we work to ensure departmental activities are child safe.

Finance’s contact with children primarily occurs through our School Leaver Program for Australians who have recently completed their Year 12 Certificate (or equivalent). In addition, from time to time, Finance may host events in which children are invited to participate.

Annual risk assessment

Finance has undertaken a child safety risk assessment for the 2024-25 financial year and determined the risk of harm to children as low.

Control measures are in place to ensure we both operationalise our commitment to the safety and protection of children and young people and continue to meet our obligations under the Commonwealth Child Safe Framework.

Key activities for the 2024-25 financial year include a refresh of our Child Safe Policy to ensure it remains current with Finance’s operating environment and the latest guidance from the National Office for Child Safety, and ensuring all applicable employees receive the education and training required for working directly with children.
