The agencies represented on the Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce are aware of action taken recently by the Australian Federal Police in relation to a series of spam emails circulated regarding the Eden-Monaro by-election.
This matter was referred by the Australian Electoral Commission to the Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce for relevant agencies to consider. As a result, this matter was investigated by the Australian Federal Police.
The Australian Federal Police is the lead agency on this matter.
Background
The Electoral Integrity Assurance Taskforce is a network of Federal Government agencies that provide guidance and expertise to the Australian Electoral Commission on a broad range of issues within the Australian electoral environment.
The Taskforce comprises the following agencies:
- Australian Electoral Commission
- Department of Finance
- Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet
- Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications
- Attorney-General’s Department
- Department of Home Affairs
- Australian Federal Police
The Taskforce is also supported, as needed, by the national intelligence community.
The Taskforce was convened for the 2018 federal by-elections and for the 2019 Federal election. The Taskforce is again operating for the 2020 Eden-Monaro by-election.
