Nation-building Funds

Building Australia Fund

The Building Australia Fund (BAF) was established on 1 January 2009 by the Nation-building Funds Act 2008 [External Site] (the NBF Act) to finance capital investment in transport infrastructure (such as roads, rail, urban transport and ports), communications infrastructure (such as broadband), energy infrastructure and water infrastructure.

The Infrastructure Minister, in accordance with the NBF Act, has developed and tabled the BAF Evaluation Criteria [External Site] to be applied by Infrastructure Australia [External Site] , the advisory board of the BAF, in giving advice regarding potential projects to be funded from the BAF. Proposals relating to the National Broadband Network (NBN) are not assessed by Infrastructure Australia. An implementation study for the NBN is being undertaken by the Department of Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy.
