Since 2009, a number of reviews into parliamentary work expenses and its administration have been commissioned, including:

On 23 March 2016, the Government released the Review Report and recommendations on options for an independent parliamentary entitlements system. The Government supports all the recommendations in principle.
The review recommendations are being progressively implemented by the Department of Finance and the Remuneration Tribunal.

The Department of Finance commissioned a review of the Administration of Parliamentary Entitlements by Ms Helen Williams AO, former Secretary of the Department of Human Services. Ms Williams provided her report to the Department in January 2011.
The Department of Finance accepted and implemented all of Ms Williams’ recommendations.
On 8 September 2009, the Government announced a number of reforms to the parliamentary work expenses framework in response to the Australian National Audit Office’s report, Administration of Parliamentarians’ Entitlements by the Department of Finance and Deregulation. The Government referred broader matters for future reform to the parliamentary work expenses framework to an independent Committee.
On 24 March 2011, the Special Minister of State tabled the Committee’s report in the Parliament. The Department of Finance and the Remuneration Tribunal have implemented a number of the Committee’s recommendations.
