Gain a Certificate IV or Diploma in Information Technology
Apprentices undertake a formal study program at a Registered Training Organisation. Current Apprentices study subjects such as:
- Programming (Canberra only)
- Systems Analysis and Design (Canberra only)
- Networking (Canberra only)
- Testing (Adelaide and Brisbane only)

When you complete the Apprenticeship Program, you will have two years experience working in ICT in the APS. You will have the opportunity to build on your experience and take on an exciting and challenging career with the Australian Government.

What will I gain from participating in the Program?
You will gain valuable on-the-job training working in an APS environment, and your study will lead to a Certificate IV or Diploma in Information Technology.
How much will I earn?
Apprentices earn an attractive and competitive salary package, which includes leave and superannuation.
What is the duration of the Program?
The duration of the Program is up to two years, commencing in February each year.
What work would I be expected to do?
You will work as part of a team in an ICT area of a participating Australian Government Agency undertaking various ICT related tasks. There are expected positions available in Canberra, Brisbane and Adelaide in a broad range of areas including networking, programming, testing, and systems analysis and design.
Do I need previous ICT experience?
You do not need to have any previous experience with ICT, just an interest in ICT and a desire to learn more about it.
All you need is to be eligible for employment in the Australian Public Service and a Year 12 certificate or equivalent. Equivalent qualifications include, but are not limited to:
- Year 12 Certificate from another country;
- demonstrated life experience;
- demonstrable ability to undertake and complete tertiary-level qualifications (eg. Certificate II in any discipline, not necessarily limited to ICT); or
- proven work history in the ICT industry or service provision industry.
Where would I be working?
Each agency focuses on specific areas like communication, defence, finance, environment, education and training, health and community services, workplace relations, science and so on.
Is it a permanent job?
You will be employed in an entry-level role working in an Australian Government agency for the duration of the Program. Upon successful completion of the Program, you will have the opportunity to apply for a permanent position in the APS through a merit based recruitment process.
What support would be available to assist me succeed in the Program?
Your supervisor will guide your day-to-day work, answer questions and provide advice. You will also be provided with support through your training institution and will be provided with additional support through a dedicated pastoral carer, who will monitor the progress of all the Apprentices in your cohort.
