About the Department
As a central agency of the Australian Government, the Department of Finance’s key purpose is to support the Government’s objectives of responsible expenditure and public sector improvement. Finance provides high quality advice and support in respect of the Budget, public sector resource management and reform, advertising and asset sales, as well as overseeing the Government’s investment funds and Government Business Enterprises. The Department also provides a range of professional services relating to property management, ICT management, the Commonwealth’s insurance and superannuation arrangements, and entitlement administration for parliamentarians and their staff.

Finance is currently transitioning to a new operating model which sees us resourcing our work in a more flexible and efficient way. Our focus is recognising, developing and deploying the capabilities of our staff in line with our priorities.
The Project Deployment Team (PDT) is the central hub to support Finance’s new operating model. Staff attached to the PDT are mobilised to projects according to the department’s priorities. Projects attached to the PDT sit in all functional areas of the department covering a wide range of business operations. Staff attached to the PDT benefit from the opportunity to work on a wide variety of interesting projects, and in areas that may also develop capability in other areas of interest.
Temporary Employment Register
The temporary employment register (the register) is open for individuals to register a general expression of interest for employment with Finance using our online recruitment system. The register allows Finance to access appropriately skilled and experienced people at short notice either in a short term capacity as part of a surge response team, or a in a longer term role as part of an extended project.
Your application in the register will remain active until 31 December 2016. After this time you will need to renew your registration by reapplying.
The department will review the register when the need arises to fill non-ongoing opportunities.
Information for applicants
To apply for the register you must:
- be an Australian Citizen
- be prepared to undertake and pass a security clearance process
- serve the redundancy benefit period (in the case where you have received a redundancy benefit from the Australian Public Service or the Australian Parliamentary Service) before applying for this register
Preparing your application
You will need to indicate your capabilities from the list in the application form, the classification of employment for which you are applying, and those areas in which you have expertise and experience – for example: policy, project work, procurement etc – as well as your relevant qualifications. Positions may be full-time, part-time or casual depending on business needs and requirements.
Your application must also include a resume detailing previous employment history. Please list your most recent employment first. It should provide all relevant information about your employment experience, qualifications, achievements, abilities and interests.
Your referees may be contacted at any stage of the assessment process over the phone or via email. For this reason, it is important that you advise them you have applied for a role at Finance, and that you feel confident they will be able to support your claims. Please indicate clearly on your application form if you do not wish your referees to be contacted prior to being shortlisted for a role.
